Get your lips on tastings of these four fine wines...this week...don't miss out!

Man alive are we delivering amazing lineups on the tasting barrel currently. Last week was a stunner with the Rapaura Springs Reserve Sauvignon Blanc shooting out the door from the moment we opened it.

This week we have four more stunning wines to share. It's definitely starting to act like White and Rose weather so we're opening up another spectacular white this week, this time a Pinot Gris from acclaimed vineyard Ara.

Ara Single Estate Pinot Gris

Coming from just one location in Ara's massive Marlbourough Vineyard means this wine will speak to the terroir and grape production with one united voice. The team at Giesen/Ara describe this wine as delivering delicate aromas of pear and nectarine which flow through to honeyed flora and citrus notes on the palate. On their website they offer a beautiful sounding Annabel Langbein recipe for Asparagus, Spinach & Lemon Risotto. You can read that recipe by clicking here. Picking up a Gold Medal at the NZ Aromatic Wine Competition, elsewhere you may pay up to $21.99 for this beautiful Pinot Gris, Manly Liquor's just $16.99.

Giesen Brothers Gewurtztraminer

Bob Campbell endorses with 4.5 Stars, Cuisine with 5 Stars and it was just awarded the Trophy for NZ's best Gewurtztraminer at the NZ International Wine Show. Intensely perfumed and deliciously flavoursome with Turkish Delight, lychees, tingly toasted aromatic spices, violets, orange oil, a lightly honeyed texture and lingering musky sweetness this is a true delight to sample. $30 at the cellar door, we're delighted to bring it to you for just $21.99. Yvonne Lorkin says "Great with garlic and chilli prawns." John and Ivan agree, great as a BYO at Manly Thai!

New from Johnny Q - Enchanted Tree Shiraz

Johnny Quarisa is the genius behind great Aussie Reds like Caravan Petite Sirah, the Shot in the Dark's, the Johnny Q's, 30 Mile Limit and Treasures, all wine labels that have enjoyed great success here at Manly Liquor. This brand new wine to the shop just scooped Trophy for Champion Shiraz/Syrah & Predominant Blends at the NZ International Wine Show. The judges tasting notes read "Wonderful flavours of blackberry, chocolate tart, espresso and vanilla are brilliantly supported by a richly textured palate that offers silky mouthfeel and loads of delicious flavours. An instantly gratifying Shiraz." With an RRP at $25, this is stunning value at $16.99!

Weaver Pinot Noir 2011

We've had the Weaver 2009 in the shop for months but we've changed vintage. Come and try the 2011 this weekend. It's every bit as good, if not better, as the 2009. Look at its accolades:

Gold Medal, Spiegelau International Wine Competition 2014
5 Stars Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
5 Stars Winestate Magazine, Nov 2013 issue
Finalist – Pinot Noir Tasting, Winestate Magazine, 2013 Wine of the Year Issue

The winery describes the wine: "Lifted perfume and spice on the nose with berry fruits and toasty oak. Rich ,sweet red fruit on the palate, dried herbs and spicy oak. Medium
body with velvety, fine grained tannins." Yummy yeah? It's going to match well with any red meat meal, specially lamb roasts or a venison steak. It'll set you back $25 on special at teh cellar door...we'll do a little better for you...just $16.99 or $15.99 in a case deal. At the case price that's almost buy 11 get 1 free...almost!

Come on in Thursday through Saturday and give this terrific line up a taste. The stock up high, the silly season is nigh!

Let's get into these free tastings this weekend!

Four award winners to excite the taste buds with this week!

Waipara Hills Pinot Noir

Come and taste a wine from a countryside now sadly damaged after this week's earthquakes. As we write we don't know too much of what has happened to the wonderful Waipara Valley growing district, but this wine will reinforce what a great area it has been. A Pinot Noir recently awarded Gold at the New World Wine Awards, Waipara Hills Pinot Noir is just $14.99 (compared to $22 at the cellar door). Match it up with slow cooked Spanish lamb finished with saffron, smoked paprika and garlic.

Rapaura Springs Reserve Sauvignon Blanc

Gold at the NZ International Wine Show and 5 Stars from Raymond Chan on release makes this a stunner of a Savvy....and at just $16.99 (reduced from a $22 RRP) an absolute bargain! Raymond Chan says "This is a mouthfilling and concentrated Sauvignon Blanc with pungent passionfruit flavours, freshness and presence. Serve as an aperitif and with Asian cuisine over the next 2 years." Come on in this weekend and try for yourself - indeed why not grab a bottle, order up some crumbed fish and chips at the takeaways and head down to the beach for a picnic....or in the car as rain cover....

Mission Estate Gimblett Gravels Reserve Merlot - and still in the 2013 vintage!

Recommended by Cuisine, 5 Stars from Wine Orbit, Gld at teh NZ International Wine Show and Blue Gold at the Sydney International Wine Show - an absolute stunner, normally priced over $30 for just $19.99. This is a rich and complex Hawke’s Bay Merlot single vineyard wine. A nice intensity on the front palate with very good tannins that are quite firm at bottling but softening over time. This wine will develop well over 10 years or longer and will drink beautifully with a roasted pork loin, a slow cooker beef stew or maybe a veal chop with portabello mushrooms (hint, use some of the merlot in the reduction sauce).

Giesen The Brothers Chardonnay

Cuisine gave this 5 stars and a best buy tag making it one of their top wines. Here's what they had to say:

"It was love at first taste for the entire panel with this wine. “Understated, but so elegant and sophisticated,” said Jane Boyle. Apricot, citrus, mealy and hazelnut flavours are tethered to a persistent flinty seam. It is a joyous mouthful, finishing lengthy and dry.
Another great seafood wine; serve with fish poached in chilli-infused coconut cream."

On the Cuisine home page its noted as being $33 a bottle, you'll be loving it at our very special $21.99!

See you this weekend in downtown Manly.

A super lineup of wines on the free tasting barrel this weekend

Waipara Hills Pinot Gris

This winemaker's on a roll and their Pinot Gris is the top of the line, and crazy value at just $14.99 - you'd pay $16.99 at Auckland's largest wine retail chain! Winner of a Gold and the Trophy at the NZ International Wine Show just weeks ago, this Pinot Gris will make you very happy! Aromas of crisp red apple, quince and a hint of nougat pour off the glass and then you'll get apple, pear and nougat flowing through the palate finishing with a touch of ginger and crisp acidity. Lovely with Asian dishes such as mildly spiced Szechuan chicken.

Matua Lands and Legend Sauvignon Blanc

A massive medal tally with Trophy at Sydney, and gold medals at New York, Decanter, Marlborough, San Francisco & Hong Kong. It's beautifully balanced with layers of flavour. Intriguing aromas of smoky pineapple & dried sage leap from the glass. The palate is brimming with ripe blackcurrant & zesty citrus... Refreshing & mouth wateringly luscious. All this flavour and prestige for just $19.99. Elsewhere it's up to $29.99!

Mission Estate Syrah

$16.50 at the cellar door, this wine is great value here at Manly Liquor at just $13.99. The nose exhibits vibrant dark berry notes with good spice and black pepper overtones. The fruit driven palate has a soft texture and good persistence. This wine is made in a medium bodied style with good freshness that shows off the great flavours of Syrah grown in Hawke’s Bay without the strong influence from maturation in oak barrels. Come in and make your own tasting notes!

Mission Estate Reserve Cabernet Merlot

We're still selling from the best ever 2013 vintage with this wine! $29 at the Cellar Door, we've got it for you at just $19.99. This is a must buy a case and cellar it kind of deal! It has vibrant colour and classic rich dark berry and oak aromas that are all so reminiscent of great Hawke’s Bay reds. There are hints of cassis, tobacco and plum on the nose. The palate has great structure with an abundance of fine ripe tannins. The wine in the mouth has full mid palate weight and texture with the oak component understated, allowing fruit to shine through on the finish. It offers cellaring potential aging gracefully for five years or longer.

Four Spectacular Wines on the free tasting barrel this week

Weaver Summer Rose

This was one of our best ever picks. The great people at Weaver rang and said do you want last year's vintage at a great rate. We said great. You guys said great. Here we are. Still got a few cases of this bargain left. John's going to grab one of them for the Christmas season. You should too! At just $11 a bottle when you buy two or more this is almost a steal. We've got cases stacked at the front of the shop to make the process really easy! Enjoy this delicious Rose with a fresh seafood medley salad.

de Vine Organic Chardonnay

"Lots of fruit-strength in this wine, plenty of spine and some oak, working together well in a balanced way.  Quite a strong Chardonnay, a food wine, mouth-filling and the components are still able to unfold the fruit statement further over the next two (more) years.  Very good drinking, a little gem still fulfilling itself." Peter Saunders 4.5 Star Review. $12 per bottle or $10 a bottle for the case buy. Great with creamy seafood pastas!

Giesen Brother's Pinot Noir

Now our most popular Pinot between $20 and $30, the Giesen Brothers is a delightful fruit of the forest and smoked cherry delight. A good Marlborough example like this one always delivers more than its shelf price when compared to say an Otago example because the base costs in Marlborough are so much lower than in Central. Normally tipping the scales just over $30, this beautiful wine is currently just $21.99 a bottle and comes in convenient and easy to carry six packs if you'd like to stock it up a little. With a 5 Star Cuisine recommendation, it's at the top of the game for truly brilliant Pinot Noir. Try this delicious wine with a venison poached in red wine sauce.

Mission Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Mission's entry level Cabernet Sauvignon is a must try at just $13.99. It's a Gold medal winner at CWSA and offers hints of cassis and blackberry. Medium bodied with sweet rich fruit on the finish. It's balanced and well rounded delivering well above its price point for Cabernet fans! Great with lasagna and a crisp side salad.

Another $10 drinkable Shiraz - oh yes! And more at Manly Liquor's free tastings this week.

From Saltram's - Maker's Table Shiraz, just $9.99

As I said last week, we can all be thankful that Aussie just produces way too many Shiraz grapes...that flows through to amazing deals on some of the produce...and this one from Saltram's is just great. A value driven Shiraz that is still full on the palate and bouquet. It's possibly the perfect $10 wine, come see for yourself this weekend.

Ara select Block Limited Release Block K54 Pinot Noir, $22.99

Ara Estate Block K54 Painot Noir normally sells for much, much more. But Ara were taken over recently and the stock pile has to go, so deep discounts are the order of the day. This is incredible, top line Marlborough Pinot Noir at a very significant saving on its original price! 18 points from Raymond Chan is almost 5 stars. Medium-full bodied, the palate possesses sweetly rich flavours of savoury dark-red berry fruits with nuances of plums and liquorice and dried herbs. Raymond Chan. This gorgeous Pinot Noir will sit beautifully with lightly prepared venison or lamb dishes.

De Vine Waipara Reserve Pinot Gris, only $19.99 or two for $35

This is a sumptuous and rich medium-dry Pinot Gris from one of the country's top growing districts for the grape, Waipara. Michael Cooper says "The 2014 vintage has a fragrant, peachy, spicy bouquet. Mouthfilling, with strong, ripe stone-fruit, pear and spice flavours, it's an Alsace style, with gentle sweetness and excellent depth and harmony". It'll match well with white meat dishes and Asian Cuisine.

Matahiwi Estate Sauvignon Blanc, super smooth and only $13.99

Winner of a Gold Medal at the New World Wine Awards, this is a smooth, sophisticated wine. Most Savvys get up and scream hello, issue an expletive and slap you. This one sidles alongside and whispers downlow, hello good looking, take me out for some seafood will ya?

"Lots of fruit-strength in this wine, plenty of spine and some oak, working together well in a balanced way.  Quite a strong Chardonnay, a food wine, mouth-filling and the components are still able to unfold the fruit statement further over the next two (more) years.  Very good drinking, a little gem still fulfilling itself." Peter Saunders in his 4.5 Star review. Also 4.5 stars from Wine Orbit and 4 stars from Michael Cooper..

2016 Sydney International Wine Competition
2015 China Wine & Spirit Awards
2016 International Wine Challenge
2015 San Francisco International Wine Competition
2015 BTI World Wine Championships

Need we say anymore??? This is a massive hit with judging panels around the world. Deep purple in colour. Ripe blackberry and plum fruits on the nose with floral notes. Varietal fruit-driven palate, with cherry/berry fruit and spice flavours. Soft tannins complement the fruit with mouth-filling generous finish. Match this red beauty with Roast Beef, Lamb or Venison...or as with most Shiraz, your favourite spicy dish. Elsewhere $21.99+, Manly Liquor, just $16.99.

Aged by the winery just for us, this wine delivers plums and blackcurrant on the nose, with hints of smokey leather and sweet vanilla also evident. Dark plums and blackcurrants again dominate the palate, inter-mingled with dark, high-cocoa chocolate and some subtle cedar characters. The experience is extended with a long vanillin- oak, soft tannin finish. Superb with rich red meat dishes. Merlot is an easy wine to match with food, but I'd drink this with a hearty steak or lamb offering myself. The experts open it right up and say that it's the perfect rd for matching with white meat dishes. ONLY $19.99 for this amazing wine that can be up to $29.99 elsewhere.

After the great reaction to the Shiraz last week, this week we thought we'd introduce you to their Cab/Sav.

Ara Single Estate Sauvignon Blanc

When the Giesen Brothers bought the Ara vineyards, they found themselves with thousands of bottles of Ara wine to clear, so we're able to bring you this premium Sav Blanc at a ridiculous value price. Elsewhere still up to $21, we've got this Gold Merdal winner at just $16.99. Carrying both a 5 star Cuisine Review and a Blue-Gold medal from the Sydney International Wine Competition, this wine fills your mouth with lush grapefruit and gooseberry with a refined dry finish. At it's normal retail it's not actually a Manly Liquor product, but reduced down to $20, it's an amazing buy. It won a Gold from Dish Magazine in their latest wine competition and is going to be a favourite while stocks last with the fans of big oaky Chards. Stone fruit features in a French Oak wrapping, and it'll be a great match with Chicken or Turkey meals.

Zonte's Footstep Baron Von Nemesis Barossa Shiraz

Free tastings at Manly Liquor this weekend, including "The Chocolate Factory"

I first had a chance to taste "The Chocolate Factory" late last year at a previous place of employ. It is amazing. We sold tons of it in no time at all and in fact we exhausted the stock available in the country in record time. I'd love to give my old shop a run for the money, and I reckon we can if you come on in and try this sexy Shiraz.

Zonte's Footstep "The Chocolate Factory" Shiraz

As the name suggests, this is a wine for chocolate lovers. There's choc on the nose and the palate, it's a juicy and full weight Shiraz and a real point of difference wine. There's no substitution for tasting, just come in and have a go. It's amazing value at 20.99, a $25 plus wine, it's great value!

Matahiwi's Holly Pinot Gris - the Gris that makes you think you've got a  big, buttery Chardonnay in your hands!

This has been a massive hit with customers over the last 3 months. If you're someone whose missed out on its previous tastings, don't. If you love Chardonnay's with that big buttery mouthfeel, you should partake of this delight. At only $14.99 it saves you a fortune on comparable Chards, and it's a great taste on its own as a Gris. Alsace style, it's rich, oily and an absolute delight.

Brightside Organic Sauvignon Blanc

“It is beautifully lifted on the nose showing rockmelon, nectarine, lime zest and subtle herbaceous notes. The palate delivers loads of tasty flavours and excellent fruit intensity, leading to a lingering mouth-watering finish. It is generously expressed and immensely likable. At its best: now to 2018.” 90/100, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, March 2016. Just 17.99 for this organic delight.

Codice Tempranillo

This delicious combination of juicy black fruits, smoky oak, spices and dried herbs all wrapped in a creamily textured wine is simply amazing. It all finishes smoky and silky. This is a great wine for the remaining wintery nights...and it'll go great with lamb dishes, I'm thinking a delight with Shanks and Mash. Codice Spanish Tempranillo just 15.99 elsewhere $18.99++.

Yalumba Patchwork Barossa Shiraz

Here's a wine to warm away any Winter Blues and make you think summer berries! "This is a copybook Australian shiraz to serve with richer pasta dishes, perhaps gnocchi with a roasted tomato sauce. An appetising nose of dark fruits, flowers and spice leads into a fleshy mouthful of lovely flow, intensity and gentle persistence." Cuisine Mag's review - and they gave it a Top 10 Rating with 5 Stars and a Best Buy commendation. Elsewhere $25.50, here at Manly Liquor while stocks last, just $19.99! So that's a BEST Best Buy!

Weaver Estate Central Otago 2009 Pinot Noir

Winning a Silver at the NZ International Wine Show and a 4 Star rating from Michael Cooper, this beautifully aged, full flavoured Pinot Noir has been making a select group of customers very happy indeed. It's a stunner that was being sold for well over $30, some places over $40, till the Estate decided to empty the cellars of it and Ivan decided their empty could be our fill up. Dark fruit, cherries, plum, spice and hints of smokey cedar oak will delight your palate. Just $16.99 and honestly, there's not a lot more of it left.

The Giesen Brothers Chardonnay

We tried some of this last week. It's a real classic, big, oaky and creamy as cream! Another great seafood wine; serve with fish poached in chilli-infused coconut cream." Cuisine in their 5 star, top 10 review. It probably would have been best buy too at our price. Normally just a dad over $30, we've got it at just $21.99. It's gorgeous. Come on in for a sip!

Giesen Pinot Gris

The entry level from Giesen is still a real crowd pleaser. You'll start with aromas of candied pear and quince, followed by a subtle floral lift with lavender. On the palate you'll find spiced pear, a waxy supple texture, bright acidity, persistent flavour and mouthfeel. Giesen suggest a food match - it's quite exotic and hard to get your head round in winter - Roasted pear and feta tart with fresh salad leaves. Just under $17 at the cellar door or by mail order, pop a bottle in your bag at Manly Liquor for just $12.99.

Two MORE Organic Whites, an Organic Red and an amazing new Shiraz

Yes, we've made a  very real commitment to locate affordable quality organic wines. Typically organics seem to inevitably be above $20. We've found 20+ under $20 examples and this weekend we've got three of them open for you to try along with a pretty special new Aussie Shiraz.

Zonte's Footstep Lake Doctor Shiraz - $20.99 - 5 Stars and Multiple Golds

"Named after the cooling afternoon breeze off Lake Alexandrina in the Langhorne Creek district, where the fruit for this wine is sourced. 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in new and seasoned oak hogsheads. Full, impenetrable black-hued purple-red colour. This has a tightly bound, concentrated and intense nose of ripe black berried fruits with earthy plum and an amalgam of lifted herbs, black and white pepper, exotic florals and spicy, cedary oak. Full-bodied, rich, sweet and lusciously ripe flavours of black berry and plum fruits, liquorice and black pepper show with layers of herbs, florals and spices. The mouthfeel is vibrantly juicy and lively with fine, grainy tannin extraction and grip and discreet acidity lending energy and drive. The flavours and mouthfeel lead to a very long, sweet, black-fruited finish with liquorice and aromatic herbal notes. This is a rich, lusciously aromatic Shiraz and Viognier blend with vibrant fruit and fine structure. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 7-9+ years." Raymond Chan's 5 star review. RRP $24.99, just $20.99 here at Manly Liquor.

Stony Estate Organic Reserve Central Otago Pinot Noir - $15.99 - 4.5 Stars

If you didn't know it already, Stony Estate is a wine label belonging to Manly Liquor. Each wine is personally chosen by Ivan, and in this case with an unimportant yet positive input from John. We agreed, given the price point we'd be able to deliver this wine for, it was spectacular. Central Otago Pinot is rarely under $20, so $15.99, or $15 when you buy 6 or more, is an amazing feat! Sam Kim at Wine Orbit writes "Beautifully matured and complex, the bouquet shows dark berry, smoked meat, nutmeg and earthy mushroom characters. The palate is sweetly fruited and generously textured, and offers layers of fine texture and polished tannins. A richly savoury style with plenty of seductive flavours. At its best: now to 2017. June 2016." Under its original Vineyard Reserve label, this wine was selling around $30. It's great buying, come in, taste and you're probably going to buy!

Brightside Organic Pinot Gris - $16.99 - New Release

This brand new 2016 vintage (one of the very first 2016's in the shop) is Kaimira Estate's entry level label Pinot Gris. Their estate label was well received at last week's tasting so we thought we'd give this fresh new vintage an outing this week. It's a luscious drop, fresh pear, stonefruit and spice flavours all packaged in an off dry style that drinks well on its own or as a partner with classic Gris matches - white meats and Asian cuisine are notable ones amongst the range.

Richmond Plains Organic Sauvignon Blanc - $19.99 - 4 Stars Michael Cooper, 4.5 Stars Wine Orbit

Zesty with lots of classic Sav flavours abounding.

"It's intensely aromatic on the nose showing ripe citrus, peach and feijoa aromas with a touch of lime zest. The palate is juicy, vibrant and full of attractive flavours, finishing long and refreshing. A real crowd-pleaser." 4 ½ Stars - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

"This mouthfilling, lively wine has strong tropical-fruit and herbaceous flavors, and is fresh, finely balanced and lingering." $ Stars - Michael Cooper, Listener, Feb 2016

This is a fine Savvy, let it grace the table with your best seafood dishes or just serve it up pre-dinner as an aperitif to get things started.

From the estate of Dr John Forrest (home of the acclaimed Doctor's Riesling - which we have in stock by the way) comes this delicious Pinot Gris. Some oak seasoning delivers a bright, pale straw colour with light lemony hues, pale on rim. This has a very fresh, bright and lively nose of white stonefruits with lifted exotic florals, fermentation esters and subtle nuances of honeysuckle. It's brisk and lively, revealing spice and musk element and will match well with Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese fare. This is a top class wine and at 23.99 represents a finer touch for your enjoyment!

Music Bay Light Alcohol (9%) Spring Sauvignon Blanc

We think this is the fullest flavoured light alcohol wine we have offered. It's a little more than the cheapies in this segment, but here's your chance to taste and see why it's worth it's $13.99. You'll get flavours of red apple, white peach and citrus notes that tantalise the taste buds and bring this wine to life. Pair it up with light dishes, sashimi, grilled seafood and poultry

Weaver Estate Central Otago Pinot Noir

"I am loving this debut pinot from this shiny-new, Alexandra-based family estate.  It is intensely perfumed with cherry, boysenberry, violet, black tea and sandalwood.  Silky and slippery in the mouth, it has delicious, spicy warmth, superb depth and delicious length of flavour.  While there’s a good few years left in this wine I can’t wait to see what they do next." Yvonne Lorkin - just $15.99!

Altemura Sasseo Primitivo (that's also known as Zinfandel)

This amazingly dark red wine will make your heart jump as you see it pouring in to your glass. It looks great and the experience begins! Lift it to your nose and enjoy the full and intense aromas with hints of plums, jams of red fruits and sweet accents of spices. It has a mouth-filling flavour that is warm and soft and expresses a highly mature fruitiness, supported by a pleasant complex of sweet tannins. You'll love this wine in Winter and it's over delivering at $19.99. Salute!

Morton Estate 2011 Hawke's Bay Chardonnay

This complex and full bodied wine shows aromas of ripe melon, candied citrus, quince and toffee. The palate has superb depth and length of flavour. Rich mouth-filling fruit is supported by toasty French oak. If you love big, bold, oaky and buttery Chardionnays, don't miss a chance to try this magnificent example of the style. Just $19.99 - so hard to get this style at $20 or less.

Giesen Organic Sauvignon Blanc

The Giesen Brothers are building a fully organic business model to meet the growing desire for wine made in a traditional chemical free environment. They're creating a sustainable range of wine that doesn’t compromise on taste, starting with the Giesen Organic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It's certified by BioGro NZ 5096.On the nose you'll get passionfruit, snow pea and elderflower. Followed with nettles and citrus. Then on the palate you'll enjoy bright and vibrant minerality showing through citrus. It's a balanced palate weight, with a long energised finish. Enjoy at just $15.99 - and enjoy fewer sulfites as well (The level of sulfites in wine is measured in “ppm”, or parts per million. In the United States, conventionally made wines are permitted to contain up to 350ppm of sulfites. Organic wine-making typically limits the threshold level of sulfites to 100ppm, and levels are generally much lower (around 40ppm to 80 ppm).)

Matahiwi Late Harvest Holly (a "sticky" for dessert on a cold winter's night)

We've tried this before and it's a really classic dessert wine. Full, treacly and decadent, a delicious combination of botrytised Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling that delivers a not sickly sweet, just right sweet treat. Fine Wines on FREE tasting this week

Five wines, all south of $20, and all great drinking right now.

The star of the show is probably the

Morton Estate 2009 Black Label Merlot

Grant Burge Fifth Generation Barossa Shiraz

This lovely wine is intense red with bright purple hues. The nose reveals a highly aromatic bouquet of red cherries, lifted orals and subtle vanilla, while the palate displays ripe red fruits such as raspberries and strawberries. Fine tannins and acidity complement the ripe fruits and provide a freshness to the wine. Match with aromatic foods such as Moroccan Lamb Tagine or authentic Shish Kebabs. Only $15.99 for a great Barossa Shiraz.

SOHO Stella Sauvignon Blanc

This is, quite simply, one of the top Savvies you will ever taste. Multiple top score reviews attest to its magificence.  It's a truly classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. 2015 was an extremely dry vintage producing a wine with exceptional power & concentration. Lifted aromas of gooseberry, passionfruit & nettles. The palate is lively & focused with beautiful mineral acidity & amazing texture. It's only $19.99 here at Manly Liquor, it can be $24 and more elsewhere.

Matahiwi Estate Pinot Gris

Here's a more Alsace style of Pinot Gris that is richer and more complex. A portion has therefore been barrel fermented to develop texture and complexity in the final wine. The palate displays aromas of pear, nectarine and toasted almonds leading to a lingering dry finish. This wine is best enjoyed in its youth but will further develop over the next 4 years. It's great with food matches such as white meats like chicken or veal with creamy sauces (especially with mushrooms) and fresh noodles, Hot pâté en croûte, Foie gras, Veal kidneys in cream sauce, and any slightly smokey foods or sauces. Magnificent value at $14.99.

It's an absolute bargain at $14.99, almost half the price at the vineyard cellar door...and VERY hard to find elsewhere!

It's no mean feat to grab a medal from the Decanter awards but if someone's going to, it's more than likely the team at Craggy. Clean and fresh with an elegant balance, it is a more mineral and lime-citrus style than many other (more tropical and herbal) Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. This focused and pure wine is an exercise in restraint and definitely food-friendly. WOW - SOHO Valentina Syrah

You lucky devils. We've got a bottle of this highly awarded and critiqued Waiheke Island Syrah for you. This promises a real wow factor on the tasting table this week. First, let's start by saying it's $33.90 on Waiheke at the Wine Centre. Here in Manly we've got it down to just $29.99, 10% less after the horrendous costs of shipping off the island! The Wine Centre speak of it in reverential tones - "synonymous with opulence, extravagance & femininity. Warm berry fruit & black plums worthy of a decadent Roman Emperor. This voluptuous silhouette offers hints of spice that are bound by toasty oak. A seamless structured palate with a bodice that is receptive & candid. SOHO Rosso... inspired by Valentino, created for lovers of perfection." Hilarious, but evocative none the less. Come on in and taste his double Gold 5 star rated wine and see for yourself. Pop one or more on the shelf for this Winter's treat, or assess for yourself and order a case for the cellar. It's strength will offer real cellaring potential.

FREE Wine tastings this week are...

Four fabulous wines with a price range from $11.99 to $19.99, so very affordable from the cheerful to the very serious high quality multi 5 star awarded SOHO Stella. Here are some notes to tempt you to visit!

SOHO Stella Sauvignon Blanc

Raymond Chan's 5 star review reads "Bright, very pale straw colour with light green hues, near colourless on the rim. The nose is fresh and elegantly presented with tightly bound, intensely penetrating aromas of white stonefruits entwined with passionfruit and gooseberry notes, and fine, mouthwatering mineral elements. The fruit aromatics are lifted by white floral nuances. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate features a finely concentrated core of white stonefruits, gooseberries and passionfruit, along with thirst-quenching minerals. The acidity is fresh and lacy, lending vitality and energy to the fruit, and poise and liveliness mouthfeel. The palate line is soft textured, with delicate drive leading to a chalky, minerally, dry, sustained finish. This is an elegantly concentrated Sauvignon Blanc with vibrant fruit and fresh acidity. Match with seafood, salads and vegetables over the next 2 years." At $19.99 this is Sauvignon Blanc at its finest and well worth ordering to cellar and mature an extra year.

Mt Monster Shiraz

With two Gold medals including the NZ International Wine Show and two silvers under its belt, this is a (sorry for the pun) monster Shiraz. You'll in all probability agree with all these judges and want a bottle in your house for a night tucked up in front of the heater with your favourite DVD or Lightbox online. It's a deep purple in colour with ripe blackberry and plum fruits on the nose with floral notes. It's a fruit-driven palate, with cherry/berry fruit and spice flavours. Soft tannins complement the fruit with a mouth-filling generous finish. It's a premium example of the finest of Aussie reds at a very accessible $18.99.

Leveret Merlot/Cabernet

We tried the Reserve of this wine a few weeks ago. People loved it and we're almost sold out. Let's take a look at it's little sister then. From the utterly awesome 2013 Hawkes Bay vintage, this gorgeous wine. The dry conditions for 2013 with a long dry autumn allowed for the grapes to reach full tannin and flavour ripeness. The grapes were grown at Leveret's Tantallon vineyard in the Bridge Pa area of Hawkes Bay. Brix at harvest was between 24 and 26 brix.

The wine is the result of a selection and refinement process that started in the vineyard with the manual manipulation of canopy and yield, through to the barrel selection at blending time. The employment of winemaking techniques of cold soaking, extended maceration of skins and partial draining prior to ferment have all been utilised to extract the maximum power from the fruit while ensuring that the finesse of the wine is retained.

Post fermentation the wine was transferred to barrel for 12 months maturation in new and used French oak barriques. Following maturation, the wine was blended, fined and finally bottled in July 2014.

With a Pure Silver Medal at the Air NZ Wine Awards, it's a bargain buy for your cellar and table at just $17.99, up to $2 less a bottle than elsewhere.

Stony Estate Central Otago Pinot Gris

This is one of the top selling wines at Manly Liquor and with good reason, it's a very personal pick of the boss. Ivan's Stony Estate label is about quality bargains. Many of you will have tried and enjoyed for the price the awesome Stony Estate Sauvignon Blanc at just $10. This Pinot Gris, from a best selling Otago vineyard, with all the quality and fruit intensity that you're used to from an Otago wine, rates 4.5 stars at Wine Orbit and is yours for just $11.99. Wines from $10 in this week's FREE tastings

A bargain Savvy, an aged Red at a beautiful price, a multi award winning Pinot Gris under $20 and a 94 point Robert Parker Spaniard. What a delightful week!

Clifford Bay Sauvignon Blanc by Vavasour

This Sauvignon Blanc is all about expressive fruit flavours. It possesses a light straw colour and tropical aromas of guava, melon and citrus. The palate exhibits the same fine flavours followed by a crisp, dry, flinty finish.

Clifford Bay are focused on preserving both varietal character and regional accuracy in all of their wines. Their winemaking regime has evolved to emphasise the inherent freshness, balance and structure of their fruit. After harvest, the grapes are gently pressed, fermented and aged in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to ensure freshness, bright aromatics, lush textures and balance. It's a superb gold medal wine at just $10 a bottle. Grab a case at this better than Blackmarket price!

Hanwood Estate by McWilliams - 2012 Vintage

"Great bang for buck here. Exciting aromas of liquorice, cedar and mixed berries. Palate a delicious mix of dark berries with a hint of mint. Tannins provoking salivation are a lovely compliment. A great young and cheap cab sav ready to drink now." - a real customer review from online wine tool Vivino, an app that's well worth having on your smart phone...and obviously written a year or so ago since we'd no longer call 2012 young, rather a nice age! This beauty is just $11.99 and comes with multiple gold medal endorsements.

SOHO White Label Pinot Gris

This wine is a bright & refreshing style of NZ Pinot Gris. Pretty fragrances of lemon zest, pears & quince. Stylish with very good fruit purity & varietal character. The palate is full of ripe citrus with a clean, spicy finish.  The younger sibling of the SOHO Jagger Pinot Gris it's a suave little number that will give your palate a hedonistic thrill. A silken seduction of baked apricot, apple spice & luscious pear create an ethereal smooth texture. A right price at 16.99, elsewhere up to $2 more.

2012 Bodegas Castaño "Solanera Viñas Viejas" Yecla

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Robert Parker is one of the wine world's best known and most respected wine writers. His comments:-

"Even more remarkable is the 2012 Solanera Vinas Viejas, a blend of 70% Mourvedre, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Grenache aged 10 months in a combination of French and American oak....this amazing red wine displays notes of lead pencil shavings, acacia flowers, black raspberries, blueberries and black currants. This full-bodied, intense 2012 tastes like it should cost three to five times as much. Full-bodied, stunningly pure and textured, it should last for 4-5 years, possibly longer....(it has) been reviewed favorably in the past, but the 2012 seems to ratchet up the quality to even more impressive levels."

This is an utterly splendid Red to put in your cellar for this Winter season at a warmingly great price of 24.99 - the less aged slightly lower rated 2013 vintage is elsewhere at $10 more.

More FRESH HOPPED, this week it's Tuatara

It's another week and we have some great Tuataras. We're cracking open all these great beers for you to enjoy this Friday, the 22nd, 4-7pm. A Tuatara pro will be with us and you can enjoy one or the whole lot, depending on your interests:

The hops are always greener on the other side, in this case the other side of Cook Strait. There's only one way to get those cones to the North Island in prime condition and that's to scramble the jets. OK, it's to scramble a single engine prop plane with the seats taken out, but be assured that the 1200kg of green hops that went into Conehead 2016 were flown direct from Motueka to Paraparaumu in an actual plane, touching down right next door to the Tuatara Brewery. One short hop for a brewer, one giant green-hopping for mankind.

Style: Green-hopped IPA

Taste: Enjoy vibrant notes of passionfruit, gooseberry and grapefruit that only the freshest Sauvin hops can provide.

Look: Golden Pale Ale

Aroma: Tropical fruits, passionfruit, gooseberry, mango and spicy grapefruit.

Try With: Szechaun Roast Duck, Braised Rabbit and good Continental Sausage.

Hops: Nelson Sauvin

Malt: Crystal and light crystal

Alcohol (ABV): 6%

Bitterness (IBU): 45

We unleashed some young, local Hop Hunters, along with legendary hunter, Davey Hughes from Swazi and a motley band from Tuatara to hunt out the wildest and most untamed of hops, hidden deep in the leafy grottos of the Waikanae River.

For only the wildest and gnarliest of hops are behooved to pair with a lively Pale Ale, brewed to celebrate Taika Waititi's Hunt for the Wilderpeople - a film portraying the bold, wild nature that (if you scratch the surface) resides within us all!

Hunt for the Wilderpeople, a new film by Taika Waititi playing in cinemas now.

Imagine you’re a fruity wee New Zealand pale ale to be, proceeding in an orderly fashion from mash tun to kettle. When up spring a coupla clowns on the lam, smelling like wild pork & watercress, and threatening saturation with undignified volumes of wild (hip)hops upon you. Well now: shit just got real, people.

Taste: A light body enhances an earthy, lemon and floral flavours.

Look: Light golden.

Aroma: Fragrant Lemon & Feijoa with notes of wild NZ bush.

Try it with: Wild Pork & Watercress.

Hops: Pacific Jade, Columbus, Cascade & Wild Fresh Hops.

Malt: NZ Pilsner, Wheat, Light Crystal.

Alcohol/ABV: 5.0%

Bitterness/IBU: 25

Kiwis are notorious for developing an enthusiasm for local commodities only after a thumbs up from the more discerning parts of the world. In the case of Nelson Sauvin hops we think that’s a little unfair.  Tuatara and Sauvin were released into the world at about the same time so we knew them back in the day.  We’re celebrating with Sauvinova, a single hop pale ale exploding with the distinctive tropical gooseberry notes that made it’s Sauvignon Blanc namesake famous.

Taste: Full malt body copiously hopped with Nelson Sauvin displaying mouthwatering gooseberry, pineapple and grapefruit flavours. Balanced bitterness.

Try With: Duck salad, salmon and asparagus, oysters, goats cheese.

Hops: Nelson Sauvin

Malt: Pilsner, Vienna, Crystal

Alcohol (ABV): 5.2%

Bitterness (IBU): 34

SEASONAL - Copperhead Red Rye Ale

Additions and substitutions are largely meat and potatoes to the creative brewer. Altering the malt base is one of the more popular forms of tinkering, and the addition of rye grains to the carbohydrate regime adds flavours you won’t find anywhere else. Following on from the summer success of Outrigger comes an encore release of Copperhead. Low in bitterness – enhanced with Bramling Cross hops – Copperhead is smooth on the palate, allowing the spicy rye to come forward. The sweet, complex aftertaste has hints of spice and fruit. It’ll slot in well at the ski lodge as you lounge on the tiger skin rug in your smoking jacket, or whatever else it is you do to while away the colder months.

Taste: Smooth on the palate, the low bitterness allows the spicy rye to come forward, finishing with a complex sweet, spicy and fruity aftertaste..

Look: Red rye has a rich red hue with a fine white head.

Aroma: Notes of spicy rye & subtle fruity hop.

Try With: Crispy pork belly, beef, stout and onion pie.

Hops: English Fuggles, Goldings, Bramling Cross

Malt: Rye, Aurora, Shepherd's Delight

Alcohol (ABV): 4.5%

Bitterness (IBU): 36

Tuatara Mandrake Bruju Citra-limed Pale Ale

A collaboration of Tuatara and Mandrake brewing. This is a gently hopped pale ale with notes of citruis and Kaffir lime. In this super citrusy collaboration with our friends at Tuatara, Citra hops and Kaffir lime leaves unite to bring you a beer full of tropical fun times. We've used a new hop addition technique that delivers an intense fruity aroma yet gentle bitterness.

Hops: Centennial, Citra

Malt: Dew Kaffer Lime APA

Alcohol (ABV): 6%

Bitterness (IBU): 40
